I receive the following error when searching pdfs:

Failed to call CreateInstance. [HRf: -2147467259]Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call(more)

I am running 32-bit Vista with Adobe Reader 10.1.9. I have "Process file contents using File Handlers (slower)" selected in the "Advanced" tab. My pdf file handler is:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader\10.0\Reader\AcroRdlF.dll 10.1.9.22

Fileseek will find queries in the pdf title but not in the content. I get the above error instead.

What am I missing? Thanks, Brian

Could you try installing this version of the Adobe PDF iFilter to see if it works?

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611

Thanks!

Hi Keith,

I have recently been "downgraded" to Win7 - which is why I am looking for a decently functional file search utility.

Fileseek will show me all the .pdf files that it cannot search if I do not tick the plug-in box, but when the search is refined it does not find the files in which I know the search terms reside . . .

Ok, is it Windows 7 64-bit? If so, you will likely need this PDF file handler instead: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025

Ok, could you send me a screenshot of the FileSeek Settings > File Handlers tab, showing the .pdf extension?

Thanks!

Everything looks ok there. Could you send me a screenshot of your Search tab, with the results included?

Suddenly it seems to be finding the .pdf files . . .

However I need some advice on search terms. Some of our searching is liable to be quite specific and following the guidelines (as best I could find them) I wanted to search for the individual term "Section Container", however if I use "Section + Container" it finds all instances of botheh "Section" and "Container". Can I effectively tailor the search to find only both words together ? ? ?

Glad to hear the search is working correctly!

The + is used to find all files where the two words both exist anywhere in the document, even if they're not right next to each other. If you want to find the words only when they're together, just make sure to wrap the Query in quotes, so your Query box would contain (including the quotes):

"Section Container"

Please let me know if you have any other questions at all.

Thanks!

I'm getting the following errors when I search PDF's with file handlers selected :

Code

Failed to call CreateInstance. [HR: -2147467259]
Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call(more)

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.07 installed on Windows 7 x64. I installed PDF iFilter 64 11.0.01 from here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5542) and I added the "bin" folder to my system PATH environment variable as described and rebooted.

Below is a screen shot:

As indicated in the image above, the error does not occur with all PDF's.

@Jeff: Can you uninstall v11 of the Adobe iFilter and try this one instead: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025. v11 has a lot of weird issues that we weren't able to work around.

Thanks Keith!

Replacing version 11 with version 9 seems to have gotten rid of the errors but I find it strange that now I find more matches when I don't use the File Handler.

For example:

I find 29 matches for a word when I search a particular folder that contains twelve PDF's. When I tick 'Process file contents using File Handlers (slower)', I find only 12 matches.

What am I not understanding?

That's strange! Can you attach a screenshot of each search (with and without file handlers)?

Ok, I think I know what's happening there. If you enable the "Only show first result for each file" option on the Advanced tab, do you get the same number of results for both searches?

Nope...

If I tick 'Only show first result for each file', I get 5 results without the handlers and 12 results with the handlers. When I use the handlers, I get 12 results with or without ticking 'Only show first result for each file'. I get 29 matches without handlers and without 'Only show first result for each file' being ticked. By the way, there are 12 files in that folder.

Ok, that makes sense. The File Handler only returns a large blob of text as a single line, so FileSeek can't match more than one line in the file. When File Handlers are disabled, you're getting more results because it's matching some metadata and other stuff in the file that when parsed as plain text are technically on different lines. Note that most of the additional results in the screenshot when using no File Handlers are duplicates from the same files.

Hope that makes sense! Please let me know if you still have any confusion about how the file handlers work :)

Thanks!

ifilter version 9 64-bit moved. but found it from CNET downloads. ... it's working, but I do get "PDF file was searched but contained no text" if quick and easy way to suppress those file hit, still looking for that answer ... thanks!

There sure is! Just disable the "Show an error when an empty PDF file was found" option in the Settings :)

As I'm upgrading to Windows 10 on my a few licensed laptops, I keep having to re-discover and solve searching PDFs by installing ifilter. Again today.

Do you have to load Adobe Reader DC?

Latest Adobe Reader DC "Windows 10"
https://get.adobe.com/reader/

PDF iFilter 64 11.0.01 PDFFilter64Setup here
https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5542&fileID=5550

After reboot, when searching PDFs, I now get

Failed to call IPersistFile:Load. [HR: -2147467263]
The method or operation is not implemented.

And a few minutes later, FileSeek has stopped working

Windows 10 1511 build 10586.318

Advanced uninstaller unable to uninstall ifilter, due to process from C:\Windows\System32\SearchFilterHost.exe
Trying to stop Windows Search / WSearch affects W10 dependencies

I was trying to uninstall 11, to try v9 on Windows 10, but stuck at the moment.

Any other suggestions? Is v9 on W10 the best approach.
Any requirement for Adobe Reader? I tend to use other PDF readers.

For PDF iFilter version 9 PDFFilter64Setup here
Thought the link below might work, but CNET dowload wants a session link, version 9 should be http://dw.cbsi.com/redir?ttag=restart_download_click&ptid=3001&pagetype=product_pdl&astid=2&edid=3&tag=link&siteid=4&destUrl=&onid=13455&oid=3001-13455_4-53528&rsid=cbsidownloadcomsite&sl=en&sc=us&topicguid=digitalphoto%2Fphoto-sharing-publishing&topicbrcrm=&pid=11015070&mfgid=50607&merid=50607&ctype=dm&cval=NONE&devicetype=desktop&pguid=320bbf255794fe65c3e6cadf&viewguid=dD320IJojQe-SGK-8dtKpaSLhpzuOJvs9gnt&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.adobe.com%2Fpub%2Fadobe%2Facrobat%2Fwin%2F9.x%2FPDFiFilter64installer.zip

...maybe someone can decipher from the above, an alternate, similar to
https://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/9.x/PDFiFilter64installer.zip

Longer term, will there be a way to get the file handler, and or no filter option, to work without finding this post? Searching PDFs is one of the things I need most often.

Thanks

We have a download link to version 9 of the Adobe PDF iFilter in the FileSeek FAQ: https://www.fileseek.ca/FAQ/#filehandlers

Not sure what you'll need to do to uninstall version 11, but usually I can just uninstall it via Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Hope that helps!
